NASR remains a ribbon-only award. NASM is a 2024 extension with the identical ribbon plus a North Star/Compass Rose device, not a blanket replacement. ALNAV 026/24 issued 18 March 2024; underlying SECNAV memorandum 15 March 2024; MARADMIN 005/25 updates manual in 2025. Original authorization cited is OPNAVNOTE 1650 of 3 June 1987; exact original establishment date not independently resolved.
Service years and award dates
Years help surface possibilities. A date overlap does not show that someone earned an award. Some date rules describe completion, specific operations or retroactive eligibility, rather than a universal service window.
| Dates | What the source says |
|---|---|
| Jan 1, 1982 – End not specified | NASR/NASM retroactive effective date; NASM requires specified ice transit, under-ice submarine, or ice camp service beyond ordinary NASR criteria. Source ↗ |
